Understand and translate the needs from the market into technical solutions. Principle Responsibilities • Initiates and develop new, improved products according to the market needs. Plans and leads the projects, leading to a commercial launch. Interfaces with BASF account management and customers for new product introductions. • Ensures that all R&D results generated from BASF and cooperator trials/experiments are properly collected, summarized and interpreted. • Maintains good communication with the commercial and manufacturing staff of the organization. Organizes and exchanges information with the global innovation and R&D teams. • Use effectively the processes for development of a total systems approach to solving technical challenges. This includes the use of functions in Ludwigshafen, universities, Wyandotte R&D, trade groups or government agencies. • Becomes an integral part of the Management of Change procedure for the introduction of new raw materials. Lead the approval process at certification agencies. • Assists technical service engineers and quality staff with product technology related issues. • Manages and stays within the budget set for product development and innovation. • This position will have a strong interaction with the customer and different divisions within BASF, therefore strong communication skills are a requirement. Knowledge and Experience: • Must have a high level of academic qualifications, a Masters of Science is required, preferably a Ph.D. in the field of chemistry or chemical engineering, or other technical engineering disciple. It acts as a competence center that offers the full spectrum of R&D support and uses its knowledge to help improve the chemical processes, pharmaceutical products, instrument design, quality and safety, forensics investigations, and much more, of the DSM Business Groups and other customers. In addition, its professional R&D services and state-of-the-art analytical, engineering and testing labs help its customers to comply with stringent European standards. Because it is located at DSM’s knowledge intensive R&D Campus in Geleen (Netherlands), it has direct access to a wide variety of additional expertises. Function details: This person will manage a multi-cultural group of 15-20 (senior) scientists and technicians on aspects like coaching, assessments, development, work environment, safety, set of instruments, materials and cluster departmental costs. The Morphology cluster represents different disciplines or competences, like microscopy (LM, SEM, TEM, AFM), XRD and Thermal Analysis (DSC, TGA, etc.). He/she will build excellent relationships with the DSM Business Groups and other external customers in order to find answers to their needs. Expectations for this role include: Know the business of the customers and deliver the required contribution to the objectives of the customer with the help of his/her service driven organization. Focus on performance, quality and acknowledgement of DSM Resolve and maintain a network in such a way that the recourses of the cluster are optimally deployed in order to achieve the objectives. Be knowledgeable of the state-of-the-art as regards the professional factual outside world, report on this subject, initiate and maintain, personally and through your employees, the necessary internal and external contacts. Education and qualifications: PhD in Material Science or (Polymer) Chemistry with 6 to 8 years industry specific experience (within material field) including demonstrated supervisory or team leadership ability. In-depth understanding of characterization and physical properties of polymer materials (PE, PP, PA, UP). Very good knowledge of microscopy and thermal analysis, and of the necessary equipment. Very good knowledge of analytical techniques and an excellent know-how of morphology related properties like e.g. brittleness, failure, whitening, transparency, gloss, haze, shrinkage upon crystallization, dimensional stability and water uptake. Knowledge of imaging techniques (mesoscopic). Demonstrated ability to integrate scientific knowledge into business goals. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and groups and individuals in a safe organized and productive manner. Competent in, and comfortable with, dealing with and managing an ever-changing highly competitive industry/environment. Familiar with western (business) culture.
