Company: Dow Corning Europe S.A. Department: Surface & Interface Solutions Center (SISC). Reporting to/hierarchy: R&D Group Leader Surface & Interface Solutions Center The Dow Corning Surface & Interface Solutions Center is a unique, world-class, global resource dedicated to working collaboratively with customers to design innovative composites or molecules, processes, surface interface and inter-phase technologies in multiple markets, including plastics and rubber. Function details: This person will support the growth of the Dow Corning Plastics & Composites applied R&D project portfolio set in collaboration with the Marketing team. He/she will develop and lead the discovery and implementation of disruptive silicon-containing additives technologies as well as lead the development projects to support the business growth of the Plastic & Composites market. He/she will focus on short and medium term applied R&D projects aiming at developing and evaluating new technologies within the Plastics & Composites market applications, optimizing plastics modification and the filler/interface matrix system for composites performance benefits with customer interactions. He/she will work at establishing Dow Corning as a recognized expert in the field and reinforce its technology leadership position in this market. Expectations for this role include: Create, evaluate and prototype new concepts and technologies for customer validation and business development. Deliver technical support for the plastic program and for participating to define and uncover unmet market needs, driving new plastic program opportunities. Plan, implement, develop and lead the plastic application capabilities including maintaining and upgrading the in-house lab assets in direct relation with plastic engineers and technicians. Promote and foster innovation and feasibility studies for new technologies development and portfolio regeneration. Supervise direct resources (human and equipment) and develop supports (analytical, synthesis, process engineering, supply, etc) according to portfolio priorities. Understand and follow research development at competitors and customers as well as market openings in monitoring key publications. Manage Intellectual Property rights issues. Ensure proper technology transfer to the application technical service group. Manage co-operation with internal/external partners and customers. Publish research outcome and actively participate in key conferences. Education and qualifications: PhD or equivalent by experience in Material Science or (Polymer) Chemistry with 5 to 10 years or more hands-on experience in the plastics industry. In-depth understanding of the plastic market needs and trends and more specifically in engineered plastics. Recognized as a leading scientist in the plastics industry by his/her peers. Technical knowledge in plastics modification, composites additives for improved performances and fillers/fibers reinforcement. Good understanding of the chemistry related to plastics additives and applications, filler treatment and interface control, polymer modification and material structure/properties relationship. Experience in silane/silicone and biofillers/bioplastics is a plus. Knowlegde of upscaling techniques to assist the custumers is not necessary but will be recognised as a plus. Personality and mentality: Passionate about innovation with an entrepreneurial mindset. Able to think out of the box and to challenge existing paradigms. Strong business awareness to develop market-driven technologies. Self-driven, self-starter and self-motivated in developing novel technical solutions to support market growth. Good communicator with excellent presentations skills. Can work in a team and in a multi-cultural environment. Ethical and trustworthy. Languages: Fluent in English both oral and in writing. Ideally also fluent in one or more other European languages. Willingness to learn local language (French). Mobility/travel: Approximately 25% of the time will be spent in (global) traveling.
